Michael Halligan
As an aspiring graphic designer I have a passion for creating and designing my own art and media using many different platforms. I believe that I have the eye and knowledge needed to produce high quality work and I strive to design and create graphic media that teaches, inspires, and captivates the audience.
I am a member of the class of 2022 at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont with a major in Media Studies, Journalism, and Digital Arts and a minor in Business Administration. I was also a member of the SMC Division 1 Nordic Skiing team and served as Team Captain 2019-2021.
About the Project
This web documentary is the final product of my senior thesis project at Saint Michael College. I was tasked with choosing a socially significant topic to research and present either a book, documentary, or web documentary platform.
Being a Division I nordic skier, I have used wearable technology like smart watches and heart rate monitors since freshman year of high school. Relying on the data that my watch gave me was important, especially during high intensity interval training where I had to make sure my heart was at a certain bpm (beats per minute). That is where the idea for this topic came into play. During my own experience, it felt like the data my watches and heart rate straps were developing weren't always as reliant or accurate as I needed, or wanted them to be. Multiple teammates and friends I have made over the years have also had the same or similar experiences.
I spent my fall semester of 2021 digging around, doing research, and collecting interviews about the topic, and the knowledge and stories I have gathered is displayed to you here on this web documentary platform. I am happy to have been able to share with you what I have found, and hopefully you have learned something about wearable training technology and the effects it can have on coaches, athletes, and people.
